Primary Education in the Ethiopian Highlands: Sibling’s effects, risk aversion, and diversification

چکیده

This paper contributes to the knowledge about how educational investments are allocated across siblings within the household. More specifically I focus on investigating whether there are signs of diversification, formal schooling being a risky investment. The data used is unusual in that it includes the head of household’s risk preferences in addition to school-related and other information. This allows me to test whether older sibling’s education is differently related to school start and school progress in households with differently risk-averse heads, something that should be expected if there is any household level diversification. I find this to be the case with regard to the probability of school entry, but not of school progress. And, the diversification mechanism is not strong enough to dominate forces creating positive sibling dependency in education. Trying to evaluate what causes the positive siblings’ dependency I focus on economies of scale in education/sibling interaction and liquidity constraints and results points towards economies of scales being the important mechanism creating the positive siblings’ dependency.

Revisiting the phylogeography, demography and taxonomy of the frog genus Ptychadena in the Ethiopian highlands with the use of genome-wide SNP data

Understanding the diversification of biological lineages is central to evolutionary studies. To properly study the process of speciation, it is necessary to link micro-evolutionary studies with macro-evolutionary mechanisms. Micro-evolutionary studies require proper sampling across a taxon's range to adequately infer genetic diversity. Here we use the grass frogs of the genus Ptychadena from th...

On the Microeconomics of Diversification under Uncertainty and Learning

This paper investigates the microeconomics of diversification, based on a two-period model of an owner-managed firm facing uncertainty. The analysis utilizes a general statecontingent representation of uncertainty and learning. Economies of diversification are defined based on a certainty equivalent, which has three components: expected profit, the risk premium (measuring the cost of risk avers...

The Employee Clientele of Corporate Leverage: Evidence from Personal Labor Income Diversification

Using employee job-level data, we empirically test the equilibrium matching between a firm’s debt usage and its employee job risk aversion (“clientele effect”), as predicted by the existing theories. We measure job risk aversion for a firm’s employees using their labor income concentration in the firm, calculated as the fraction of the employees’ total personal labor income or total household l...
